Baja cruises are the West Coast’s long-weekend getaway. They sail from Los Angeles or Long Beach on three- or four-night round trips to Ensenada, a port city about 70 miles south of the U.S. border, often with a stop at Catalina Island on the four-night version.
A three-night cruise typically leaves on a Friday afternoon, spends Saturday or Sunday in Ensenada and returns on Monday morning. Four-night sailings add Catalina or an extra sea day. In recent seasons, Royal Caribbean has run three- and four-night Ensenada cruises from Los Angeles, and Carnival has run four-night Catalina-and-Ensenada sailings from Long Beach.
Ensenada Ashore
La Bufadora
A marine blowhole south of town where waves force seawater high into the air, reached through a lane of market stalls.
Valle de Guadalupe
Mexico’s best-known wine region, about a half hour inland, with tasting rooms and restaurants on many tours.
The waterfront
The fish market, the giant Mexican flag on the malecón, and the historic Riviera del Pacífico cultural center.
Downtown
Avenida López Mateos, with shops, cafés and the street-food stands Ensenada is famous for.

Catalina Island

Catalina is in California, so it is not the foreign port that makes these cruises possible; it is a bonus stop. Ships anchor off Avalon, a small, walkable town known for its round Art Deco Casino building, glass-bottom boats, snorkeling at the underwater park and golf-cart rentals. Because it is a tender port, a choppy day can cancel the call.
Baja Cruise Questions
Why do short cruises from California stop in Ensenada?
Most cruise ships are foreign-flagged, and U.S. law (the Passenger Vessel Services Act) requires a foreign-flagged ship on a round trip from a U.S. port to call at a foreign port. Ensenada is the closest suitable Mexican port to Los Angeles.
Is there a tender at Catalina?
Yes. Ships anchor off Avalon on Catalina Island and tender guests ashore to the town’s waterfront.
Are three-night cruises good for first-timers?
Very. A short Baja cruise is a low-commitment way to see whether you like cruising. First Time Cruise explains what to expect.
Making a Short Cruise Count
- Board early on day one; the ship is yours before the crowds arrive.
- Book Ensenada tours in advance on busy weekends, especially wine-country trips.
- Pack light: a carry-on and a day bag are enough for three nights. Cruising Checklist has a short-cruise list.
- Even on a short trip, bring the right ID for a cruise to Mexico; see our documents page.
Short Baja cruises are also popular for celebrations: birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette weekends, reunions and friends’ getaways. If you are traveling as a group, ask our advisors about booking several cabins together, which makes it easier to keep everyone on the same deck and dining time. And if three nights leaves you wanting more, a week-long Mexican Riviera cruise from the same ports is the natural next step.
